The UK School of Soft Furnishing announced that it would be running two main courses, starting this October.
The first of these is the AMUSF Essential Soft Furnishing course starting 4th October 2019. The course will run weekly every Friday and is suitable for both beginners and those with some background in soft furnishings, upholstery and textiles.
It will be taught by a team of qualified tutors, including Maggi Loughran, and will provide students with a full background in soft furnishings, enabling them to tackle both small and full-scale projects.
The course involves both practical and theoretical elements. Tutors will introduce students to a range of hands-on assignments, providing them with an opportunity to work on cushions, blinds, curtains, and track systems. The organisers encourage all participants to keep a course notebook that includes technical notes for future reference.
The Association of Master Upholsterers approves the School of Soft Furnishing to deliver the accredited AMUSF Essential Soft Furnishing course. By the end of it, students will have completed large-scale projects, including Roman blinds, decorative bolster cushions, and interlined curtains with hand-stitched headings.

The school is also running a leisure Upholstery Course. Both day and evening versions start on 3rd October 2019 and will run for ten weeks until the 12th December 2019. The day course commences at 10 am and finishes at 4:30 pm while the evening begins at 5:30 pm and runs until 8:30 pm.
The course will be held at Potten End, near to Watford, Hemel Hempstead, Luton, Dunstable and St. Albans. Students will learn how to use upholstery equipment safely and receive instruction on individual projects.
Matthew Gates, a 4th generation upholsterer associated with the school, will lead the course and provide expert knowledge. Students are free to choose to work with both modern and traditional pieces of furniture and can purchase their own materials along the way.
The course requires people to bring their own chairs for upholstery work. The school does not allow two or three-seaters, though students can buy both tools and safety equipment.
Students can register for the course online. It is advisable to book early because of the risk of the course filling up.
Reviews of the course are overwhelmingly positive. Nina Gross, an AMUSF student, says that teachers at the school are generous in sharing their wealth of knowledge and are “hilarious in [their] delivery.”
Another student, Victoria, reported that “Maggi’s knowledge is second to none!” and that the course provided helpful handouts which allowed the learning to carry on once she got home.
